Canada remains one of the top destinations for Nigerian students. However, new rules in 2025 have reshaped the application process for study permits. If you are planning to study in Canada, these are the key updates you must know:

1. Higher Financial Proof Requirements
As of 2025, applicants must show double the minimum funds previously required. This means Nigerian students must now prove they can cover both tuition and higher living expenses.

2. Stricter College Approvals
Canada has introduced a new list of “approved institutions” to prevent students from being admitted into low-quality or fraudulent colleges. Ensure that your chosen school is on this list before applying.

3. Increased Processing Times
Due to high demand, visa processing now takes longer, sometimes up to 5–6 months. Students are advised to apply early and avoid last-minute delays.

4. Biometrics and Background Checks
Canada is enforcing stricter background checks and expanded biometrics collection. Any inconsistencies between your documents and past visa applications may raise suspicion.

5. Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) Changes
While PGWPs are still available, new restrictions apply to certain programs. Short courses and part-time programs may no longer qualify for work permits after graduation.

Pro Tip: Apply at least 8–12 months before your program starts, prepare solid financial proof, and choose approved schools for a smoother process.
