Canada remains a top destination for Nigerian students, but 2025 has brought new updates to its study permit system. Here’s what applicants need to know:
1. New Cap on International Students
In 2025, Canada introduced a cap on new study permits to control housing shortages and ensure quality education. Provinces now have quotas, making the application process more competitive.
2. Provinces Taking More Control
Provinces now issue attestation letters (PALs) that must accompany your study permit application. Without this document, your permit won’t be processed.
3. Increased Proof of Funds
The financial requirement has more than doubled. Students must now show proof of at least CAD 20,000 (previously CAD 10,000), excluding tuition. This is to ensure affordability and preparedness.
4. Stricter Scrutiny of DLI (Designated Learning Institutions)
Only certain schools are eligible to accept foreign students under the new policy. Ensure your institution is approved and in good standing to avoid delays or rejection.
5. Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Changes
Not all programs now qualify for a PGWP. Short-term or part-time courses may be ineligible. Choose your program wisely if you plan to stay and work in Canada after graduation.
6. New Biometrics and Security Protocols
Canada has enhanced its vetting process with more biometric data and background checks. Expect longer processing times and ensure you apply early.
