How to Extend Your Canada Visitor Visa
If you’re currently in Canada on a visitor visa (also called a Temporary Resident Visa or TRV) and wish to stay longer, you’ll need to apply for a visitor record to extend your stay legally. Extending your visa is possible—but it requires proper timing, documentation, and a clear reason for your stay.
Here’s everything you need to know to get started:
1. Understand the Visitor Record
A visitor record is not a new visa—it is a document that allows you to stay in Canada longer than the original period granted at entry. It includes a new expiry date by which you must leave or apply for another extension.
Important: You must apply before your current status expires.
2. When to Apply
You should apply at least 30 days before your current visa expires. The expiry date is usually stamped in your passport when you entered Canada (typically 6 months from your arrival date).
3. Eligibility to Extend
You may be eligible for an extension if:
-
You are currently in Canada with legal visitor status
-
You want to extend your stay for tourism, family, health, or other valid reasons
-
You have enough financial support to remain in Canada during your extended stay
-
You don’t pose a security or health risk
4. Documents Required
Here’s what you’ll typically need:
-
A valid passport
-
Proof of current legal status in Canada (e.g., entry stamp or current visa)
-
Reason for extension (a short letter explaining why you wish to stay longer)
-
Proof of funds to support your extended stay
-
Application form [IMM 5708]
-
Application fee (CAD $100)
5. How to Apply
Applications are submitted online via the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website. Create an account, fill out the required forms, upload your documents, and pay the fee.
Once submitted, you must remain in Canada while waiting for a decision.
6. After Applying
If your application is approved, you will receive a visitor record stating the new expiry date. If denied, you will need to leave Canada by the date originally stated.
You must not assume automatic approval—plan your stay carefully and avoid overstaying your status.
